How Lori Senecal Leads by Coaching

In the business world, managers and executives have many ways of running their operations. Usually, the method taken has a lot to do with the personality of the particular boss. In the case of Lori Senecal, leadership means coaching her people to excellence. It is a skill she learned long ago, yet it has served her superbly throughout her career in advertising.

For Lori Senecal, the path to Madison Avenue began in Quebec, where she grew up. Ms. Senecal is the youngest of her parent’s four daughters. She is a graduate of Montreal’s prestigious McGill University, and she speaks fluent French. While growing up in Canada, Lori Senecal learned gymnastics. She became so well-rounded that she was able to coach, which she did in high school and later during her college years.

Coaching she says gave her insights into just what it takes to motivate people to get the best out of them. In the world of business, the same skills apply. Everyone on your team has what it takes to succeed in an organization. Ad agencies hire people because they believe they can perform. It is up to the management team, to lead by keeping everyone focused and motivated. Good leaders are good coaches in any industry according to Ms. Senecal.

The best example of her ability to coax the best out of people occurred in her time at the helm of Kirshenbaum Bond Senecal (KPS). Many observers credit Lori Senecal with taking KPS from a domestic advertising agency of 250 employees and transforming it into an international player with more than 800 staff. All while developing outstanding advertising campaigns for marquee brands such as American Express, BMW, Victoria’s Secret, Boar’s Head and others.

Ms. Senecal helped to establish a positive can-do culture at KPS, Crain’s magazine named KPS one of the “Best Places to Work in the city of New York” while the agency was under her leadership. She also received countless advertising industry awards along the way and came to be known in the industry as “the Queen of Advertising.”

In 2014 she was named among Ad Age’s “Women to Watch.” So, it was not a shocker when Crispin Porter & Bogusky (CP&B) named Lori Senecal their new global CEO. With their new coach, the advertising world can expect nothing but great things to come for CP&B. Check out their website lorisenecalglobalceo.com
